Design Statement:
The client business is pushing the envelope of creativity and innovation by developing objectives and awarding prizes to scientific endeavors on the cutting edge of today's latest technologies. Their first prize, looking for an alternative to the end of the shuttle program, was awarded to a company that develops commercial space travel. The client designs incentive-based competitions aimed at capturing the imagination of the public, spurring innovation, and accelerating the rate of positive change across the globe. Rather than awarding money to honor past achievements or directly funding research, the client incites innovation by tapping into the human competitive and entrepreneurial spirit. Despite the client's future-thinking it was important to maintain a sense of neutrality in the new space. Because the entire environment is used as an incubator for a wide variety of initiatives, the client yearned for a clean and minimal aesthetic hoping to enhance the opportunity for invention and regeneration. In addition to the architectural neutrality of the space, the founders of the company wanted to showcase the history of prize development. To realize this objective, the team designed a "story wall" as a vertical wall element wrapping the edges of reception. The story begins with a replica of their first spacecraft - built at 50% of original scale- suspended above the reception area. Carpet was used strategically to highlight specific architectural elements of the overall design. The striated pattern of the carpet in the reception area with the spaceship suspended above was selected to evoke movement as if the ship was rocketing down a runway at blast-off. The size of the spaceship required the piece be fabricated from extremely lightweight materials, and that the completed model be cut into three pieces to accommodate installation. The design team's in-house lighting design studio Brilliant, developed the lighting design to ensure focus and illumination on the model was perfect in relation to the dynamic wall-graphic.
